The very best Chinese restaurants in Toronto represent only a fraction of the diverse variety of regional offerings accessible here. And though many would claim you have to attend Markham and Richmond Hill to get the actual deal, our downtown Chinatowns, Scarborough and parts in between still have their share of winners.

Hong Shing Chinese Restaurant

The longstanding institution near City Hall may be a bit oily nevertheless they make an oh-so-satisfactory Sizzling Chili Chicken and General Tao Chicken. Wash it all down with cocktails with names just like the Stormy Night in Hong Kong.

Rol San

This late-night Chinatown favourite is consistently jam packed with those who can't get enough of their classics like hot ginger beef and ho buff noodles. Not to mention, it has an incredibly popular all-day dim sum.

Qin Tang Taste

Home to the chewy that is awesomely biang biang noodles as well as other Shanxi fortes, this little Scarborough eatery is actually the first Toronto place of a substantial Beijing-based chain. My personal favourite? The Shanxi Sliced Noodle with Stir Fried Pork Slices. Delightful dish, long name.

Luckee

This upscale restaurant from Susur Lee inside the Soho Met features all-day dim sum, sweet-yummy Wuxi spare ribs and fancy cocktails, all served under the gleam of some garish quasi- stereotypical Chinese ornamentation and lightings.

House of Gourmet

This eatery near Spadina and Dundas seems modest in the outside but is a constant hub of action, with excellent dishes like claypot tofus and satay beef noodles. It has a committed takeout BBQ joint, perfect for all those nights when you just need to feast on your own sofa on pork or duck.

Sam Woo BBQ

This Scarborough mainstay has been fulfilling old-school Cantonese BBQ pork enthusiasts for over twenty years. Absolutely crispy roast pork skin and tender BBQ pork meat combined with old school unfussy décor makes for an incredible meal.

Congee Wong (Finch and Leslie)

There are numerous Congee Wongs about that it can make your head spin, but for my money my favourite one is the North York place. Certainly it may get crowded during mealtimes, but at least it’s open late, and their Cantonese Chow Mein Fried Chili Turnip Patties never fails to make me grin.

Asian Legend

By far the greatest mainstay Chinese restaurant chain in Toronto, this eatery is the area to really go when you’re searching for a huge selection of authentic Chinese offerings. I’m a huge supporter of the Peking duck, along with the soup dumplings here are consistently on my order list.

Taste of China

The incredibly cumbersome name doesn’t detract in the fact Taste of China is, for many, a taste of superiority. Popular among the late night crowd for sizzling seafood on frying pans and its excellent General Tao Chicken, it’s one of the places that when you’re in downtown Chinatown, you just must go.
